I Like Everything...

...don't you just *hate* that? Warning: diatribe follows.

One of the things I accidentally left out of my Things that Tick Me Off post is something that I suppose doesn't tick me off, but instead, puzzles me to no end. People who say that they 'hate' (no, I mean really, *hate*) a certain idol or idols, yet are just as much in love with their favorite idol as I am with Ms. Kayo Aiko.

People who worship one idol and outwardly despise another... these are people that I don't want to know, really. For example, there are plenty of Kusumi-haters out there (you know who you are, you heartless bastards!), and also, plenty of people who love to hate Ms. Mitsui Aika (pictured above). When I look at that picture I don't feel anything even approaching animosity. I used to be indifferent to Aika, because to me she was relatively unknown and there were plenty of other Musume to focus on.

Look at my track record so far... I reviewed the Girls Box Movie (and liked it), brought up some of my favorites: SPEED, Perfume and Capsule, every Morning Musume album, Slayer... and I had good things to say about all of them. So why post a picture of Aika and say anything negative about her? Well, I'm not going to. I like Mitsui, and I like her alot. Damn right I do.

Yeah, I could nitpick and deconstruct her, mention how she's not as good of a dancer or singer as (insert random Musume here). I could talk about how the nickname 'Moonface' is seemingly apt -- Paul, we need another Chris post -- or how she actually did look kinda scary to me when she joined up... maybe it's all those teeth, she looks like she *does* bite:

..and if she does, well, no cutting into the queue! I'm in my rightful place, waiting to get bitten. But I digress.

Bringing up such a polarizing personality as Ms. Mitsui might get a reaction from some people, good or bad. I've been on both sides of the fence with her, from in the past possibly wishing she'd go away, to now, where I'm contemplating starting a site dedicated to her... hmm, moonface.blogspot.com? Naw, I just don't have the time; besides, if anyone, it's Saito Michi, then Nacchan, then a toss up between Sasaki Nozomi or Ogura Yuko.

I remember buying some °C-ute songs from iTunes, looking at the cover, and wondering, 'who *are* these people?' Some of them, I swore, I would not be a big fan of, especially Chisato, with this haircut:

I tried to think positively, that she was just as much a part of the group as all the rest, bad haircut and photograph and all. I just couldn't get past how boyish and strange she looked. Luckily, my reaction wasn't enough to go online and trumpet how much I despised her, nor ask ad nauseam, 'what's up with *this chick*?' By that point I'd had enough experience to know that if she was any good, I'd find out sooner or later. Nowadays, her signature adorns my wall, along with those of the rest of the °C-ute ensemble. And I treasure it. Chisato, sweetheart -- you ever need a place to crash, lemme know...

So after that ordeal, and seeing Mitsui Aika in a swimsuit (yowza!), it's not like I'm going to disown her as a Musume or as a person. All readers -- love her or hate her -- I'll say 'hi' for ya when I see her in Los Angeles.

Sorry, but this blog will remain a place of praise. Might be a little tiresome after a while if you keep reading my reviews and find out that I like everything I see or hear. Well, I don't, actually, and if you knew me better you'd be tired of my complaints by now. But when it comes to Japanese pop music and idol culture, I'm kind of biased.

My previous post mentioned how music is good for you, in a very real way. And I thought that finding Berryz Kobo, °C-ute, and Kusumi Koharu was a quasi-fountain-of-youth, bordering on the legend of Elizabeth Báthory in terms of extending my life without scientific proof.

With all the real things I have to complain about, Japanese pop songs (and the personalties behind them) are nice to have. Furthermore, none of these girls would hurt a fly (or you), unless they asked me to do the honors, whilst playing up the whole cute-and-scared angle.

So why all the hate?

It goes without saying that most of the internet is populated by well-meaning but loudmouthed teenagers who simply *must* project their thoughts into the world, whether those thoughts are rational or not. But even adults want to spread hate about their least-favorite idol, and these are the people I'm speaking out against.

If you can't stand Japanese pop, fine; but please, don't be a hypocrite. I'm already puzzled enough.

For the last time, then, here goes. If you're a Jpop lover, but still claim to hate certain idols, I've got to call you out, here and now. Of all the things you might have reason to complain about, why are you so down on some teenage girl from Japan who sings and acts cute?

Are you more attractive than she is? Are you worth more as a person than she is?

Then why the heck aren't people watching your videos and buying your records?

Again, love to Ms. Mitsui Aika, even if it makes me seem uninteresting. Seriously, why do you harbor hatred for specific little Japanese girls?

As a postscript, does anyone know Mitsui's 'concert color'? Or, For-The-Win, can anyone point me to a list of *all* the Musume's colors? I want to show my support (and recognize others' allegiances) at AX, 48 days from today.

Comments

  1. This picture is a good guide for each color!
    http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/8137/img20090506120745191.jpg
So if you can't tell, the colors are...
    Takahashi: Yellow
    Niigaki: (Light) Green
    Kamei: Orange
    Michishige: Pink
    Tanaka: (Light) Blue
    Kusumi: Red
    Mitsui: Purple(!)
    JunJun: (Dark) Blue
LinLin: (Dark) Green (actually more like regular green...?)

Aika is my favorite Musume too, so I'm definitely going to be wearing a purple shirt at AX. I hope I get her autograph!

Also, here's a shameless plug, but there's going to be a party on that Friday (after MM performs) so you should attend and if you know anyone who's going to AX, tell them about the party! Here's the link:

  2. Great post! I feel the same, why hate what you love, essentially, right? I meant these girls give me so much joy, and it's funny how you focused on Aika, maybe my least favourite member, because she's been growing on me, in that 3-2-1- Breakin Down close up Brady Bunch version, she steals the show in her hoody in the lower left box! Also feel you on the Elizabeth Bathory tip! Thanks girls!

  3. When Aika came into MM at first I was a big fan but I turned against her when her jealous side came out and she made JunJun cry on Hello!Morning with her petty bitchy remarks. I still don't like her from that time even though both Aika and JunJun are friends with each other now. In fact I call Aika the 'Smiling Assassin' because even though she's all nice in your face, she'd be the first to stab you in the back given the opportunity. I don't hate the girl, I just dislike her attention seeking behaviour and her false smiles.

  4. @Amy, thanks for the knowledge and for the invite... since I'm going primarily for the MM concert and not much else, it's a possibility.

@Mozenator, where can I find that video?

@JJ, well, that's a good reason to dislike her. I'm referring to people that rag on certain idols without reason. I'm not a frequent H!M watcher so I hadn't known about that. What a bitch!

@everyone else: got any good reasons for hating a specific idol? Lemme hear it!

  5. I'm guessing when you say "Nacchan" you don't mean Hirajima Natsumi, because I don't see a tag for her or AKB48 on this blog, haha. I have a worship blog for that Nacchan myself...XD.

The hate thing has driven me crazy in the past. I'll admit that I've joined in on making fun of Tanaka Reina with some of my friends online, but at the end of the day, I don't really HATE her. I just hate certain performances of hers...which I'm entitled to hate. Reina herself? I don't know her. I can't hate her.

You've actually inspired me to write a post about the thing that bugs me the most in the idol fandom, which is kind of similar to this. Thanks for getting me thinking!

  6. It's the new contest video. You can see it on youtube,or Hello! Online. The version I'm talking about is the 9 different close-ups version. They put up all this footage for the fans to use to edit their own video together. Some people's videos are up on you tube already!

  7. Julia, in this case, 'Nacchan'=Hoshii Nanase, so I won't be stepping on your toes as far as AKB48 is concerned. Seems like Nacchan is a fairly common nickname, I'm not sure that Nanase wants to be called that anymore.

Thanks for the kind words and the follow-up post. Seriously, some of these girls are *ugly*? I never noticed...

Mozenator, thanks, I wondered if you were talking about the main dl page, I'm out of the running for the OPV contest already, I'm no good with that stuff.

  8. I wouldn't call myself a hater, but there certainly are idols that I dislike, Koharu is one of them. There's just nothing about her that I find appealing and she can definitely make me cringe from time to time. Even so, I don't go online and hate hate hate, but I do point stuff out sometimes, but that goes for all idols and both ways. I always refrain from judging them too fast, Aika got a lot of bashing at first but I didn't give her much attention at all, and because I gave her a chance to grow on me it all worked out in the end. She's not one of my favorites by far but I don't dislike her either.

Koharu has been on the rock bottom on my list for years now, but at least there are times when I find her quite funny, so at least she has grown on me even if it's just a tiny bit!

  9. I know I'm late with commenting but I was just thinking the same thing and it's funny that you actually use my favorite member. Now that AX is over, many people are falling to the "darkside" and are becoming closet Aika fans because they actually met her and saw her as a person. And it's even brought on more love for their favorites as well.

I would like to clear up something that was said though, in the Hello!Morning episode, Aika didn't make JunJun cry, JunJun started crying out of frustration because she couldn't remember one of the people's name in the memory competition that she challenged Aika with. But Aika continued naming people without stopping. BTW...they were both wearing earphones and looking into monitors during the contest, not at each other. And JunJun and Aika used to go back and forth, kinda like how JunJun and Koharu do now, except everyone thinks its funny.

  10. Yonasu, thanks for the comment, though I suppose it was awhile ago... my fault, not yours, and I can see why someone would be averse to Koha, although I think it's a little short-sighted. Just wait until a couple of years go by and she becomes the hottest woman on the planet. Yeah, you heard it here first... So learn the words to 'Konnichi-pa!' and meet me back here in a couple.

michan: first, you're not THE Saito Michi, aka Mi-chan, are you? 'Cuz if you are, well...

But seriously, good on you for choosing Aika as your fave. Idk, like I said in the post, it wasn't that I didn't like her, it's just that old favorites die hard. I used to be *such* a Kago fan and now that she's 'come-back,' whatever she does, I'm like, 'meh...' I liked her more as a Musume and a W-cohort.

I can see how a Japanese TV program might be misinterpreted by the lot of us Westerners, and God knows that Aika = not a threat, unless you're singing and dancing beside her, nightly. I've seen them side-by-side and I could swear that either of the Chinese Musume could put her into a coma with punches, so I wondered what the deal was. Thank you for clearing that up.

    So it's JunJun's fault, if I'm not mistaken. What a bitch! (j/k, y'all).

Finally, apparently this post has softened a few idol-haters to the point that they use the word 'dislike', even in quotes as I have it here, instead of the word 'hate'.

If I've done one good thing for Jpop, it's to have reduced the hate that is being promulgated amongst the Jpop community, simply because the idols they speak of don't bear the distinction of being 'the favorite'...

On the other hand, don't hold back on my account. If you really must hate an idol, do so... but have the reasons to back it up.
